Recorded at the end of a year in which Mountain had released two heavy-hitting albums, Nantucket Sleighride and Flowers Of Evil, New Year Concert 1971 is evidence of the pure, unfettered New York rockers letting it all out on stage. Full of winding improvisations around established classics (look out for a 23-minute reworking of Silver Paper, originally taking up a mere three minutes on the group's debut album, Climbing!) and bludgeoning takes on Blood Of The Sun (from guitarist Leslie West's debut album, Mountain) and Nantucket Sleighride's Don't Look Around, the setlist even makes room for a face-melting Auld Lang Syne, doing for the New Year's anthem what Hendrix did for The Star-Spangled Banner.
